Westpac has begun a large-scale rollout of Microsoft 365 Copilot to its global workforce of 35,000 employees, contractors and service providers, marking one of the most extensive deployments of Microsoft’s AI technologies within the Asia–Pacific financial services sector. The initiative follows a successful pilot program conducted in Australia in 2025 with 15,000 employees, which demonstrated improvements in productivity and time savings across operational areas.

According to Westpac, the organisation views artificial intelligence as a strategic capability that will support staff in working more efficiently and accessing information more quickly. The bank emphasises that AI implementation must be paired with responsible use, strong governance practices and employee expertise to deliver sustainable impact.

To ensure effective adoption, Westpac is supporting its workforce with structured capability-building programs, including AI masterclasses, prompt-a-thons and tailored support resources. The bank has also introduced Microsoft Copilot Studio, enabling internal technology and data teams to develop custom AI agents. Several agents—designed to assist with HR and IT queries and simple operational tasks—are already in use.

In parallel, Westpac has established an Innovation Sandbox on Microsoft Azure to enable teams to safely experiment with AI-driven solutions within a regulated environment. This environment is designed to accelerate the development of new tools such as workflow automation, custom agents and analytical models.

Microsoft leaders highlighted Westpac’s deployment as an example of responsible AI innovation at scale within a highly regulated industry. The rollout aims to help employees reduce digital overload, improve daily work efficiency and create long-term value for customers and shareholders.
